Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retreiver
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are intelligent, alert, sensitive dogs. They are quite trainable and tend to be very affectionate towards family members. They are working animals and are happiest when they have a job to do. Retrieving and agility are a natural trait in this breed and they often excel at these types of activities.
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, also known as Tollers, were bred to lure and retrieve waterfowl. They are a rare breed – originating in the Little River district of Nova Scotia. Like other Retrievers, they have a strong-working drive, are intelligent, and have a happy disposition. They have a wonderful personality but can be strong-willed and are not as eager to please as other Retrievers. If they are not properly trained, they can easily take control of the household. They are known to be smarter than the average person.
Tollers need early, firm, and consistent training or they will not stop until they get their way. They absolutely love children. They enjoy playing fetch, ball, or even pulling a kid on their skateboard. They also get along well with other dogs, especially other Tollers. Their prey drive, though, causes them to chase after cats or other small animals.
They are known for their loud, high-pitched scream which they let out when they are excited or frustrated. They don’t tend to bark regularly, though. They require moderate exercise. They may become destructive if they are not exercised enough or are left alone for long periods.
Major Health Concerns: Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are a newer breed and are considered to be a generally hardy breed. Their gene pool is small so they do tend to suffer from some autoimmune disorders and thyroid problems. Cancer is also seen in this breed.
Interesting fact: Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are the smallest of the Retriever breeds.
