Boxer

Highly intelligent, the Boxer is happy, playful and curious, but can be stubborn and sneaky. They bond closely with their families. It is believed that their name originated from the way that they like to use their front paws for everything, in an almost cat-like way.

Sometimes called the “Peter Pan” of dogs, Boxers have endless energy and a playful nature. They aren’t considered adults until they are three years old. That said, they have a high level of patience and are generally gentle with children, making them excellent family companions.

Due to their high level of energy, Boxers require an adequate amount of exercise. Early training is recommended to keep an adult Boxer manageable. But their high level of intelligence allows them to excel in training. They are used as part of military, police, and search and rescue teams. They make excellent watchdogs, as their nature is to protect you, your family, and your home. They tend to be initially distrusting of strangers, but won’t become agitated unless they feel threatened.

Boxers are known for their clown-like behavior. They are extremely high-spirited and happy. When excited, they tend to do a dance where they twist their bodies in a semi-circle resembling a kidney bean. Once all their energy is out, they love to hang out on the couch with you, preferably on your lap.

Major Health Concerns: The Boxer may have Cardiomyopathy and subaortic stenosis. After the age of eight, they are more prone to tumours than any other breed. Their digestive systems may cause them to suffer from excessive flatulence.

Interesting Fact: The Boxer comes in a wide variety of colours including fawn ranging from light tan or yellow, reddish tan, mahogany or stag/deer red, and dark honey-blonde fawn or brindle, without white markings.
