Semen Detection Test
Price: from £105 (NO HIDDEN FEES)
Timeframe: Within 10 working days from receipt of samples, additional 5 working days for the 3-Step Semen Detection Test
Are you suspicious of a certain stain, which could be semen? International Biosciences offers a service that can confirm or exclude the presence of semen in your sample. Our testing service does not use a kit; instead, you only need to send us your sample.
The results of the test are available within 10 working days from the moment our laboratory receives your samples.
If the client decides to upgrade and order the 3-Step Semen Detection Test, please allow an additional 5 working days. More information about this upgrade further down the page.
Important note: To carry out our semen detection test, we require consent and photographic ID from all parties. Testing a person’s DNA or biological material without the source’s consent is a criminal offence, and we will not process samples without the ID and full consent of all participants. Please see below for more information about the Human Tissue Act.
Why choose our laboratory-based testing service?
Many companies offer home or DIY testing kits to detect the presence of semen at home. These detect the presence of semen by rubbing a solution on the affected area. However, these are presumptive tests, which can often produce false positive results. These home testing kits are not accurate and reliable.
Our semen detection service is laboratory-based and does not require a kit. We only require a sample (e.g. underwear, condom, bed sheets, or any other item).
After confirming your order, we will send you a confirmation email, which includes a form. You need to print and fill out this form and return it to us together with your sample. Remember to place the sample in a paper envelope.
If you plan to send in more than 1 sample, please feel free to contact us for a quote.
Submitting your samples
We are able to test a variety of samples to detect the presence of semen. Over the years, some of the most common items we have tested include items of clothing, underwear, and bed linen.
Before sending in your sample, remember to locate the stained area, cut it out, and package it to be sent off to our laboratory.
If you are unsure about your sample’s viability, please connect with our customer support team. They are at your disposal to answer all your questions.
Science behind the Semen Detection Test
Our laboratory utilises the RSID™-Semen test, which specifically detects human semen and can detect as little as 1 μL.
It is the most accurate semen detection test available today and, compared to other methods, has better sensitivity, specificity, and speed.
The RSID™-Semen test works by detecting the presence of semenogelin, which is a protein produced by the seminal vehicles. This substance is responsible for the coagulum that is associated with ejaculation.
The results of the Semen Detection Test
Our semen detection test will offer one of the following results:
-
- Positive result – The presence of semen or sperm has been detected
- Negative result – The presence of semen or sperm has been excluded
Upgrading to the 3-Step Semen Detection Test
The RSID™-Semen test conclusively and accurately detects the presence of semenogelin. However, this method will not detect prostate specific antigen (PSA or p30) and sperm cells or spermatozoa.
Clients who want to test for the presence of spermatozoa or sperm cells can avail themselves of our upgraded service called the 3-Step Semen Detection test.
For an additional £30, our laboratory will perform the following three-step process:
1. Acid Phosphatase (Prostatic Acid Phosphatase or PAP) Screen: The first step screens for the enzyme produced in the male prostate. If this step produces a positive result, our scientists will proceed with the next two steps.
2. Prostate Specific Antigen Test (PSA): PSA is a substance produced in the prostate gland and occurs in significant amounts in an adult male’s semen.
3. Christmas Tree Stain: The third step is a microscopic analysis that visually identifies sperm cells using colored dyes, usually green and red.
If you want to upgrade to the 3-Step Semen Detection Test, please allow an additional 5 working days for the results.
This upgrade is available during checkout.
Important: The Human Tissue Act
It is important to be aware that in the UK the Human Tissue Act regulates the collection and analysis of any human tissue. In order to send a sample for analysis, the person or donor of that sample must give their consent in writing in order for us to test their sample. Furthermore, in order to be fully compliant with the Human Tissue Act, the donor of the sample must also be made aware of how their DNA sample will be used. Failure to comply with the Human Tissue Act is a criminal offence.
We will not proceed with any testing if we do not have consent from all test participants. Testing any samples will be put on hold until we get the required signatures from all individuals.
Follow up DNA testing after the Semen Detection Test
Clients who receive positive results for the semen detection test may want to carry out further investigation to confirm the donor’s identity. You will need to contact our customer support to discuss your request and quote you accordingly. Full consent will be required for this service.
