Casual sex in China sees increase in paternity tests
Paternity tests are becoming increasingly common in China, along with casual sex, as suspicious husbands check on their wives' fidelity.
Paternity tests on the increase
In one Beijing hospital, applications for paternity tests, which in the Western world can cost hundreds of pounds, had risen by around twenty percent a year.
The state-run China News Service reported that there had already been 200 paternity tests at the hospital by mid-September and, had the cost of the tests not been so high, there would have been many more.
According to the investigation, most men do paternity tests just to find out whether their wives are loyal.
A doctor was quoted as saying that eighty percent of these paternity tests proved the husbands were the true biological fathers of their children.
Paternity Tests - Relaxing Society
This change in social behaviour began when attitudes towards sex relaxed after China began Western-style market reforms in 1978 and the doctor also said the paternity tests were the by-product of a more open society.
"With the increase in one-night stands, disloyalty within a marriage, relationships become vulnerable and people lose confidence of the loyalty of marriage," the doctor said.
