DNA Testing – Is Jurassic Park a Reality?

Few periods in earth’s history create as much interest as the Jurassic Period and with ever increasing advancements in DNA testing, there are many who are convinced that dinosaurs can roam the earth again.

Jurassic Park was one of the highest grossing films of all time and its central premise surrounded the use of DNA testing to genetically engineer dinosaurs. This may seem like it should be filed firmly in the realms of fantasy but are advancements in DNA testing making it likely that dinosaurs could roam the earth once more?

DNA Testing – Answering Questions On The Cloning Of Dinosaurs

Disregarding the ethical questions surrounding the cloning of dinosaurs and focusing on whether DNA testing can be used to fabricate dinosaurs brings about a raft of questions from scientists and enthusiasts alike; the most commonly asked questions on DNA testing and the cloning of dinosaurs include:

Q: Will Extinct Dinosaurs Ever Be Bought Back To Life?

A: This is, of course, the crux of the issue. As it stands, DNA testing isn’t sufficiently advanced to create dinosaur life. However, with breakthroughs in DNA testing happening on a regular basis, it may be feasible in the future.

Q: Is It Likely That An Insect Encased In Amber Will Have Dinosaur DNA?

A: Scientists already carry out DNA testing on insects encased in amber but, as yet, there haven’t been any with dinosaur blood in their systems. The problem at present is that most of the amber found that has insects in it isn’t old enough to have been around during the Jurassic period.

Q: If DNA Were Found Inside An Insect, Could It Be Extracted And Used For Cloning?

A: Yes, it would be a technically feasible but extremely difficult process. For successful DNA testing to take place, the dinosaur blood would have to be separated from that of the insect which is in itself no mean feat. If this were to be achieved however, scientists could use a DNA testing technique known as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to replicate the DNA.

Q: If An Entire Genetic Code Of A Dinosaur DNA Could Be Harvested Then Would It Be Possible To Recreate Them?

A: Not necessarily, no. Even if the entire genome of a dinosaur was found, the DNA testing of it would be rife with problems. Namely, the DNA strand would be out of order and in tiny little pieces. It would be like putting together a jigsaw with billions of pieces and all the pieces were shaped the same.
