DNA Testing – Beware the Chupacabra

We’ve all heard of the Bogeyman but the lesser known ghoul of the Chupacabra has been said to be stalking the San Antonio wilderness. DNA testing has shed light on the mystery.

Most tales of Bogeymen are concocted to scare children into behaving but things took a turn for the bizarre when a San Antonio ranch owner claimed to have found the corpse of a Chupacabra on his land. The carcass was taken for DNA testing to see whether or not it was the real deal.

DNA Testing – Solving Life’s Little Mysteries

DNA testing has a raft of uses in the modern world; not least solving crimes and determining parenthood but rarely has DNA testing been used to see whether a carcass belongs to the mythical beast, Chupacabra. A BBC report on the case provides predictably disappointing results. Following DNA testing on the creature it was determined that it was, in fact, a coyote with a hair loss problem and not actually Chupacabra. This was probably a relief to ranch owners in the region as Chupacabra is a long held Central American myth that refers to a vampire like creature that attacks at night and leaves a trail of animal corpses with their throats torn out. The DNA testing in this case proved the creature to be something far less glamorous, not to mention decidedly less gruesome.

The BBC report into the case shows the uses that DNA testing can have and how it will continue to be of a benefit to society as the process of DNA testing is constantly evolving and providing new breakthroughs. DNA biologist, Mike Forster, who carried out the DNA testing on the creature at Texas State University said, “the DNA sequence is a virtually identical match to DNA from the coyote". So, with this mystery solved, those in the DNA testing community will no doubt be waiting for a frantic phone call from someone claiming to have captured Godzilla.
